Message by balancing out the engine, less energy is absorbed by the crank deflecting (and causing added and uneven bearing friction). A very small deflection (a couple ten-thousandths of an inch) can cause a very large change in frictional force with any high tolerance fit bearings.

The damper's can definitely help free up more power, but they can also have a negative effect. They have to be light enough to free up enough power to compensate for their added rotational intertia. Even if they don't, you still benefit from a smoother ride.
